Grassroots Classic Bottomless Pot 1 Gallon / 3.8L is a specialist fabric planting sleeve designed for establishing young plants before placing them directly onto a living-soil bed, allowing the roots to grow through the open base into the larger soil volume below.

Unlike a normal plant pot, the Grassroots Bottomless Pot has no fabric base. During propagation or early growth, the pot is placed on a saucer or tray to contain the growing medium. Once the plant has developed a strong root system, the complete pot can be moved directly onto the surface of a living-soil bed without removing the root ball from its container.

Key features

  • Open-bottom design: roots can grow directly out of the pot and into the living soil beneath.
  • 1 gallon / 3.8 litre capacity: compact size for establishing cuttings, seedlings and young plants.
  • No conventional transplant: the complete sleeve is placed onto the bed rather than removing the root ball.
  • Designed for living-soil beds: useful in long-term and no-till systems where repeated digging is undesirable.
  • Reusable: the sleeve can be used again once the old root system has broken down sufficiently.

What is a bottomless fabric pot?

A bottomless pot is a fabric sleeve rather than a conventional container. While it sits on a saucer it behaves like a small pot. Once rooted, the complete sleeve is placed on the soil bed so the roots can continue downward through the open base.

How to use the Grassroots Bottomless Pot

  1. Place the pot on a suitable saucer or tray.
  2. Fill the 3.8L sleeve with an appropriate young-plant growing medium.
  3. Plant your cutting or seedling and allow the roots to establish.
  4. Lift the complete sleeve from the tray and position it directly on the living-soil bed.
  5. Make sure the growing medium makes good contact with the moist soil surface below.
  6. Allow the roots to grow through the open base into the main bed.

Bottomless Pot vs a normal fabric pot

  • Normal fabric pot: has a fabric base and contains the full root system within the pot.
  • Grassroots Bottomless Pot: has an open base so the roots can leave the sleeve and colonise the soil underneath.

Size and dimensions

  • Capacity: 1 US gallon / approximately 3.8 litres
  • Diameter: approximately 18cm
  • Height: approximately 18cm
  • Bottom: open

Using with a Grassroots Living Soil Bed

The Bottomless Pot makes most sense as part of a larger bed-based system. If you are building a complete bed, view our Grassroots Living Soil Beds.

The NPK Gardening Solutions take

We would not buy this simply because we needed a cheap 3.8L fabric pot. Its value appears when you have invested in a larger living-soil or no-till bed and want to avoid digging into the established soil every time a new plant is introduced.

Choose the Grassroots Classic Bottomless Pot 1 Gallon / 3.8L if you want a reusable way to establish young plants and introduce them into a living-soil bed with minimal disturbance.
